Description of Program

The 1 year fellowship program aims to provide candidates with a comprehensive experience in Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Urologic Oncology.  The goal of the fellowship is to help mentor and develop leaders in the field of robotic surgery and minimally invasive urologic oncology who will make significant contributions to the field.

This fellowship is geared towards gaining advanced knowledge, clinical expertise, and technical skills. The fellowship adopts a multidisciplinary approach. Candidates will have the chance to collaborate with experts from diverse specialties such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, and advanced imaging. The fellow will have exposure to all aspects of Robotic surgery including robotic kidney surgery, robotic prostate surgery, robotic bladder surgery, and robotic adrenal surgery. There will also be exposure to image guided targeted treatments, including, prostate biopsies, focal therapy (HIFU and cryoablation), and percutaneous ablation of kidney tumors. The fellow will work predominately with Dr. Rogers, but will be an integral part of the Urology Department, working with other faculty during robotic procedures. The faculty collectively perform a high volume of robotic kidney, prostate, bladder and adrenal surgeries and there is adequate surgical volume for the residents and the fellow. The Downtown Hospital has 4 daVinci Xi Surgical systems with simulators and a daVinci SP system for clinical work.  The West Bloomfield Hospital and Wyandotte Hospitals each have 2 daVinci Xi surgical systems.  There is also a robotic system in the Henry Ford Simulation training center available for training. Fellows will primarily operate and care for patients at Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, but there may be opportunities to participate in cases at other hospitals within Henry Ford Health. Fellows will work directly with full-time academic faculty and with the urology residents.

Research:

Abundant opportunities for research are available. Fellows will also have access to comprehensive MIS clinical databases for urologic cancers for clinical outcomes research in prostate surgery, renal surgery, bladder surgery, and adrenal surgery. Fellows will have access to supervision to support their research endeavors.

The fellow will be appointed as a junior faculty member (Clinical Instructor in Urology) and will be expected to help staff a weekly outpatient half day clinic and will help take occasional call as a faculty (home call), helping to supervise residents.

Candidates applying for this fellowship are required to be eligible for full medical licensure in the state of Michigan and must be graduates of an ACGME - accredited residency program in the U.S. or Canada. The Department of Urology will not be able to sponsor visa applications for fellows.
