Brown’s Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery Fellowship has multiple tracks and has evolved over the years and and has adapted to the everchanging healthcare arena. Brown Urology faculty for the fellowship has grown over the years to include 3 Robotic Oncologists (Yale, MSKCC, Mayo Clinic) and 3 Fellowship trained Endourologists (Wisconsin, Brown, Mt.Sinai). Recent developments have allowed for optimization in research support, including IRB, grant writing and national database access support. Interested candidates may choose from multiple tracks which include:

  1. Endourology/Robotic Track – 1year (approx. 300 robotic cases/year) (approx.: 75 PCNL/with access teaching, 250 URS) – Options include: 1 year Endourology, 1 year Robotics or a combination of the two.
  2. Integrated fellowship with Brown University’s School of Public Health. The 2-year position has a primary focus on training an academic minimally invasive urologist and creating a future leader in our field. The fellow will graduate with an accredited Endourology Fellowship certificate as well as a Master’s in Public Health or a Master’s in Clinical and Translational Research.
  3. Research Scholar Track – 1 year – Basic Science Research in Oncology or Endourology

Except for the research scholar track, the fellow is responsible for coverage of all minimally invasive urologic surgical procedures (percutaneous renal surgery, endourology, laparoscopy, and robotics) cases on his/her operating room days. The fellow may be asked to interact with our residents during certain cases, but as “teaching faculty.” The fellow will be have an appointment at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

The applicant will have completed an ACGME approved residency in urology and be eligible to sit for part I of the American Board of Urology qualifying examination. Urologists who have passed part I of the American Board of Urology Qualifying Examination and are licensed to practice medicine in the United States are also eligible for consideration in the program. International graduates from non-ACGME Urology programs may apply if they have ECFMG certification and passed USMLE Step 3. Additionally current Rhode Island State Law REQUIRES trainees in non-ACGME Programs to get a FULL RI LICENSE. In order to qualify for Full RI License (rather than a Limited License), trainees MUST HAVE HAD at least 2 years of US ACGME training 

  1. SCOPE OF TRAINING Specialized training in minimally invasive urologic surgery will cover all aspects of endourologic surgery at the Rhode Island and Miriam Hospitals – Including: minimally invasive urologic surgery of the lower and upper tracts, image guided therapy for urolithiasis and tumors, MIS BPH procedures, and various laparoscopic and robotic procedures. The subspecialty training in minimally invasive urologic surgery will provide experience of sufficient level for the trainee to acquire advanced skills in each of these areas. The fellow will work with current residents in the Brown University Urology program. The fellow may staff cases deemed appropriate by the program director as a junior faculty for current Brown urology residents. The fellow may develop a focus in a particular area of minimally invasive/endourological surgery during their year. EDUCATION PROGRAM The clinical status of a fellow is that of a junior staff member. The fellow will have graded surgical responsibility and will be responsible progressively for more and more of the operative care of patients. The fellow will also be responsible for the preparation of teaching conferences for residents and staff. In addition, the fellow will have a teaching role in clinical care and serve as a research mentor. The fellow will be required to participate in clinical research but can direct his/her efforts in areas of interest. There are multiple opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with other clinical departments and professional schools within Brown University.
