Houston Methodist – Endourology and Stone Disease Fellowship
The Houston Methodist Endourology and Stone Disease Fellowship is a one-year postgraduate training program that provides advanced clinical and research experience in endourology, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and urinary stone disease.
The program offers a comprehensive balance of surgical training and academic productivity. Fellows are immersed in high surgical volumes and mentored in both traditional and innovative technologies for the management of BPH and stone disease. The fellowship prepares trainees to become future leaders in the field through hands-on clinical practice, scholarly activity, and teaching opportunities.
Clinical Experience
Fellows gain extensive hands-on training across the full spectrum of surgical management for BPH and stone disease:
- BPH Procedures:
- Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)
- Photoselective Laser Vaporization with ejaculatory-hood sparing (PVP-ejs)
- Robotic Water Jet Ablation (Aquablation)
- Stone Procedures:
- Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL; standard and mini-PCNL)
- Fellows will be taught percutaneous renal access techniques, including both prone and supine approaches
- Ureteroscopy (flexible and semi-rigid)
Fellows are expected to achieve proficiency in endoscopic techniques, laser applications, and comprehensive perioperative patient management. Training also includes daily patient rounds and structured resident and medical student teaching.
Weekly Structure:
- 3 days – Operating Room
- 1 day – Outpatient Clinic
- 1 day – Research
Academic Experience
The fellowship integrates robust research training with clinical practice. Fellows are expected to:
- Submit abstracts to the relevant professional meetings
- Present at national and international conferences
- Publish a minimum of two peer-reviewed manuscripts
Additional opportunities include participation in journal clubs, academic conferences, and institutional research initiatives. Fellows are encouraged to pursue independent clinical and translational research projects, with full support for presentation and publication.

Program Duration
- Length: 12 months (July 1 – June 30)
- Extensions may be considered at the discretion of the Division, Department, and Institution.

Eligibility & Application Requirements
Applicants must have completed an accredited urology residency program.
- Successful completion of USMLE examinations is required prior to the start of fellowship training.
- Candidates must meet all requirements for obtaining a Texas medical license.
- International applicants are welcome to apply, provided they satisfy institutional and state licensing standards.
