Job Information

The mission of Endourology Society Certification of Advanced Clinical Training programs is to facilitate the development of academic and clinical excellence in endourology and minimally invasive surgery. Fellowship training addresses the development of advanced knowledge, experience, and technical skills in endourologic and laparoscopic and/or robotic assisted surgery. Complementary to these goals, the fellow participates in clinical and basic research projects related to minimally invasive surgery. Advanced study focusses on treatment of complex kidney stones, including percutaneous access for stone treatment as well as complex metabolic stone management and upper tract ureteroscopy. The laparoscopic/robotics fellow will be exposed to a large clinical volume of oncology as well as reconstructive urology, including using the latest technology such as the daVinci® robotic surgical system.  The general time schedule is 90% clinical and 10% research.

The University of Iowa is the referral center for the state of Iowa as well as surrounding regions for the management of endourologic disease. The fellow in urology assumes the role of a junior faculty during the later parts of their training, covering ORs, clinics, and the Iowa City Veteran’s Medical Center. While the primary role of the fellow is to become adept at the clinical management of complex endourology, they would also be expected to contribute to the training of residents as well as be involved in the academic endeavors of the department. Research plays a critical role in medicine, which is critical to providing top-level care as well as fostering trainees’ development for careers in academic medicine.  Thus, the trainee submits work for publication and presentation at local and international meetings by the end of the year. Fellows are also involved in resident education informally during clinic and OR and expected to provide formal didactic lectures and participate in surgical skills simulation labs held throughout the year.

Eligibility Requirements/Criteria:

  1. Acceptance is contingent upon completion of an ACGME accredited residency training program in urology.  In special circumstances, qualified candidates who have completed their formal training in foreign countries and who have completed the requirements for foreign graduates may also apply.
  2. Applicant must have completed all three steps of USMLE.
  3. Applicants must have three letters supporting their application for fellowship.  One of these letters must be from their current program director.
  4. Applicant must be eligible for a permanent Iowa medical license.  Learn more about eligibility requirements on the Iowa Board of Medicine website.
  5. Foreign applicants are responsible for obtaining appropriate visas prior to the scheduled start of the fellowship.  The fellowship is preferentially offered to those who are considered for a staff position at an academic program nationally or internationally or who intend to pursue an academic career in urology.
