Description of fellowship
The endourology fellowship at Northwestern University is a two year program. The clinical component and research component are done over two years with the fellow spending fifty percent of his time in the operating room, and fifty percent of his time doing basic science or clinical research. The clinical component primarily includes robotic and laparoscopic procedures for prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer, with a strong emphasis on: robotic prostatectomy, laparoscopic and robotic assisted partial nephrectomy and robotic cystectomy. Reconstructive cases are also done laparoscopically and robotically, and they primarily include pioplasty and ureteral reimplantation. The significant component of the fellow is the surgical experience which also pertains to endourology, with a strong emphasis on ureteroscopic and percutaneous management of stone disease and upper tract transitional cell carcinoma. A small component of the clinical work is done in the clinic.
From a research standpoint, Northwestern University has an exceptionally strong program in nanotechnology and molecular biology. Current projects include using nanotechnology to evaluate margin status and recurrence after robotic prostatectomy, as well as preservation of erectile dysfunction. We maintain a strong database of laparoscopic and endourology procedures, and the fellow is expected to participate in approximately ten clinical papers per year.
The fellow works primarily with Dr. Robert B. Nadler, Professor of Urology and head of the section of minimally invasive urologic surgery. The fellow also works closely with Dr. Kent Perry, Associate Professor of Urology to supplement his surgical experience. Previous fellows have gone on to successful careers in both academics and specialized private practice settings and are listed below.
